This is an ongoing project I began in the summer of 2023. Kevin, or ‘Kelvis’ as he is known around Romford, sings on the market, every Saturday, every week of every month, rain or shine. He has an insatiable compulsion to perform. He drags his boogie box up and down the market and serenades shoppers and vendors alike. The title paraphrases the last line of the poem ‘Eccentricity’ by an anonymous fan, which is included in the gallery below.

Over the last two years, Kelvis and I have become friends and I have captured some of the story of his life. The project is about aging, identity, eccentricity and obsession (both Kevin’s and my own). It is also about Romford as an archetype of the typical British market town and the decline of this way of life.

Inspired by how Kevin has redefined who he is, and taking this as a lesson in dedication, discomfort and effort, it is shot on film.
